Family Values

There are four rush hours in little Limoux.  The first is the one where parents and children hustle off to work and school.

This Week in France

What an eventful week this has been.  Monday Morning Mac and I attended our French classes.  I joined a group of bilingual speakers who get together at 9:30 each Monday for lively discussion in French.  Given that most of them are British, I don't think this group will help my French much, so I will probably sleep in on upcoming Mondays.  Mac attended a beginner's beginner class and then we met at 10:30 for a French class taught by a French woman!! Hurray!  She's a good teacher and the class is a good review for me.

The food in France is always fresh, and local, and that's one reason everyone agrees the food here is fabulous.  Even the local super market has more varieties of onions than I've seen in my entire life, and that's just the supermarket.  I was eager all week for the local market day, when the farmers come from miles around.

Today, Signe and I took part in two activities in an effort to start doing it the French way.  Go ahead, yuck it up, you dirty-minded voyeurs!  Anyway, since it was Saturday, we attended a gathering of clubs, groups, and organizations operating inLimoux.  Most of them had to do with learning new things, meeting people, and doing things with other members of the community.  Some seventy organizations were represented in one gymnasium.  Remember, there are only 10,000 people in this town.  Everyone was there!  A couple of dance groups, a theatrical troupe, c

We bought a car!! Well, almost.

We are very excited that we seem to have bought a car, although we do not have the car itself.  With assistance from our very kind landlord, we were able to find a one year old Opel with only 6,000 miles on it that we are buying from a dealer (thanks to my French teacher, Jackie Victor, for the tip to buy from a dealer because they must give a guarantee). After our experience trying to set up a bank account, we went to the closing expecting to be there 2 hours with multiple papers and more papers facing us.  Not so.  There was one paper only, and the dealer will do

Settling in

Besides a feeling of "I'm dreaming and I don't want to wake up", much of our time is consumed with figuring out how to buy groceries, get a mobile phone, buy a car, and start a bank account.  Signe refused to share a joint checking account with me in 1982 and since that time we've kept separate accounts.  Yesterday, we decided to try a joint account again with mixed results.

Limoux. Are we dreaming or is this for real?

With apologies for the delay due to our technicological ineptness and the confusion of learning where to go to fix the problem, I tell you our first 3 days in Limoux have been like a dream.  The drive here was spectacularly beautiful, many of the townsfolk were dancing the Tango on the Place du Republic (aka the town square) when we arrived on Sunday at 7 pm, our apartment is gorgeous and more than perfect, our landlords are incredibly welcoming and helpful, we've almost bought a car, we know where the grocery store is, and we are in the real France where few speak English and the tour

Our Adventure on the Left

Not only did our adventure with left-side driving bring on a lot of laughs, there were also considerable screams and more laughs after the fact, for even more terrifying than driving, is being in the passenger seat.  The thing I hadn't considered is that the non-UK-native driver tends to drive far to the left in order to get out of the way of oncoming traffic on the right, and so as a result, the passenger is carreening along helplessly at 40-75 miles per hour with parked cars, stone walls, curbs, foliage that's covering God knows what kind of wall, orange cones, and you name it,

Renting a car was easy.  Driving it through Dublin and another 500 or so km. was not so simple.  As you know, cars drive on the left in the UK.  Loads of laughs as we careened along very narrow roads enroute to the Cliffs of Moher about 3 1/2 hours west.  Few divided highways, mostly extremely scenic narrow roads past castles, abbeys from the 12th century, beautiful rolling pastures with fat, contented cows, and sheep grazing.
